Expedition Larry Thursday, November 10th, 2011A great friend of the Reno Bike Project, Larry McKurtis, is on an epic bike tour from the wild wild west to the heart of South America. Thanks to semi-regular updates via Twitter (@CrazyUncleLarry) and Facebook we heard he has finished the Baja peninsula and plans to ferry to the mainland (Mexico) tomorrow to continue riding south on the mainland.
Before he left we chatted with him about bike tours. A few years back he rode his bike across America the Beautiful and says it was a life changing experience. “It changes you, the freedom and independance of riding your bike for so long really changes the way you look at things.” He encourages everyone to try it at least once, because chances are you’ll become hooked.
Here are some pictures taken from the man’s very active Twitter/Facebook feed. Thank goodness for iPhones and the internet in Mexico.

"Where else do you run into mutual Tahoe locals? Middle of the Desert in Baja. Abe and Robin were packing surf boards on their bikes" @CrazyUncleLarry
Goodbye Helmets, Hello 2011 Thursday, October 21st, 2010
I know I have some vanities about helmets as well as some practical considerations and while I wear one regularly this video gives me a sense of hope for the future. (admittedly it’s highly unrealistic but I can dream right?)

Riding The Spine Monday, February 18th, 2008The other night I was chit-chatting with Reno Bike Projects newest loyal patron, Larry, and he told me all about the bike tour he did across the U.S. He then told me of his plan to ride from Alaska to the tip of South America in June of 2008. I, having never done a tour, couldn’t fathom the intensity of his experiences. He referenced me to a website following a similar trip to help me understand. Sean Monterastelli, Goat, and Jacob are Riding the Spine. They are doing an off road tour from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to Tierra Del Fuego, on the tip of South America. They are currently in Costa Rica and I encourage everyone to follow their adventures. They are truly amazing. Click here for a quick taste.
